THE AMELIA GRACE RAINBOW FUND
The Fund was set up in memory of Amelia Grace, who died in 2010 from an aggressive childhood cancer. It supports children in Dorset and the surrounding area who are suffering from terminal, life-limiting, or serious chronic illnesses.
The concept of the charity started with Amelia herself, when she used some of her money to buy an Xbox for a friend she’d spent time with whilst in hospital. Amelia appreciated the gifts that she benefited from, and she felt that other children should have the opportunities that she did.
In this spirit, we aim to create an environment full of fun, laughter, achievement and memories through providing funds for activities and play. We strive to enrich the lives of children who are suffering. The Trustees will consider funding for holidays, family days out, games and toys, social activities such as swimming or dancing lessons, and any other request which they feel supports the aims of the charity.
We are a need-driven service. We provide funds to create happiness for children in times of need, without weeks of waiting for panel decisions. We work closely with both Poole and Dorchester Hospitals to ensure that children in their care are able to access funds when required. Most referrals come through the hospitals, although families are also able to self-refer.
Our criteria are simple: any child with a terminal, life-limiting or serious chronic illness qualifies for our help. Thus, we are able to assist those suffering from any childhood illness, including mental health conditions. In this way, we can help children who are not covered by any other disease-specific charity.
We first met Dom and his family on Christmas Day 2012, whilst delivering presents to the children who unfortunately had to stay in hospital over the holidays. We were blessed to meet this wonderful family. Dom’s mother Bronwen has actively promoted our work throughout the west side of Dorset, which has been of great benefit to the charity and to those we support. Dominic is just the sort of child that the fund was set up to help. Through the efforts of the Fund and those associated, more children like Dom will be helped in the future.
